The Mushrooms That Grew Themselves

Today started off pretty relaxed — I stayed in bed while my mom and my brother went on a mushroom factory tour. The tickets cost about $30 each, and honestly, since I didn’t go, we ended up saving that money. It turned out they didn’t even get to bring home any mushrooms — they mostly just smelled the compost and listened to someone explain how it all works.

In the afternoon, though, we went to a much cooler place: a free mushroom farm where my friend is basically the boss! We got to look at the mushroom logs, and the boss even gave us some to take home. We also picked up a whole package of fresh mushrooms straight from the cooler.

The coolest part was the two sealed mushroom logs we got — they’re like little sample kits. All you have to do is spray them with water, and the mushrooms grow right out. But here’s the crazy thing: even before we started spraying them, the mushrooms had already started pushing their way out! They were so strong that they broke right through a 2-millimeter plastic filter sheet, and I even caught a few more in the act of trying to break through. Fungi are way stronger than I thought! I also spotted a fresh little lion’s mane mushroom, so I picked it up and gave it a spray of water.

After that, we all had a great day, and I played some Spider-Man. Later, we went on a black light hunt, which was so much fun. With a black light, you can spot things that glow under the UV light — like leftover soap and other residue. You can’t actually see real germs (they’re way too tiny), but you can see germ-like stuff and stains light up, which is still really cool. I liked the game a lot, and I hope we can do the whole day all over again — even though my mom is totally worn out!
