My Glowing Laser Sign 我的激光发光灯牌

Today at the maker’s workshop, we made a light-up sign, and it used a lot of laser engraving. The idea is that you take some LED lights, drill a few holes for them, and use the big machines to cut everything to size. Then you add a clear piece of acrylic — a see-through plastic — which is the part that really makes the sign glow.

Here’s the coolest part: we used the laser in two totally different ways. First, we ran a light laser that only barely scratched the surface, so the design turned white and frosty-looking. Then we switched to a strong laser that actually penetrated the material and cut all the way through. It was amazing to watch the same machine do two completely different jobs.

The reason the design glows is really neat. The LED light shines in from the edge of the clear acrylic and travels inside it, bouncing along the whole panel. When that light hits the tiny scratched lines from the laser engraving, it scatters and escapes right there — which is why only the engraved design lights up and glows white. I thought that was such a clever trick.

After we installed everything, I pressed the button — and my sign lit up! I was so excited when it finally glowed. Today was such a fun day, and I liked it a lot. Later, after school, I asked my mom if we could eat In-N-Out for dinner, but my brother Henry wanted pizza instead, so we got a large one. The best part? There’s enough left over to be our breakfast and lunch tomorrow!
