Today I got up super early for school — but not regular school, summer school! I was working at the Urban Workshop, and I couldn’t wait to find out what project I’d get to make. To my surprise, it was a star!
First, we gathered all the equipment. I got my materials: a wooden star to use as a guide, and a long strip of metal bent into zigzag lines. We placed the wooden star in the middle to cover it, then folded down each of the points. After that, we used the wooden star again as a mold to bend the zigzag metal into a star shape.
Next came the coolest part — welding the pieces together with a welding machine. Here’s how it works: electricity flows through a circuit, and when the welder touches the metal, it completes the circuit. At that spot, the electricity meets resistance, and that resistance creates a ton of heat — enough to melt the metal and fuse the pieces together. Once we’d welded our shapes, we put a wooden block on the bottom and the metal part on top, then welded those together too. This second weld took way more work than the first one!
After the weld dried, we got to spray paint it, which was honestly one of my favorite parts. Then we added the circuits and the lights — and we had to build the lights ourselves! We had to grab the wires and the battery, cut the wire, and strip the ends to expose the metal inside. It was a pretty roundabout process with a lot of steps, but it was a blast.
After all that, my star still wasn’t finished — we’ll have to complete it tomorrow. But while I was there, I peeked at what the level 3 kids were doing: they were assembling a rusty old bike and adding brand-new parts to it. Now I’m getting really excited for level 2 and level 3 — I can’t wait to see what I’ll get to build next!
