The Bluest Pools Are the Hottest

Today was our second day at Yellowstone. First, we went to see the famous hot pools, and wow — they had every color you could imagine, blending from red to yellow, yellow to blue, blue to green, and back to red again. But here’s the part that totally surprised me: the bluest, clearest water is actually the hottest. I had always figured red meant hot, but it works the exact opposite way! Some of the colors are even caused by bacteria living in the water, which I thought was super cool.

There were so many geysers and pools around, but we went to see one in particular called Morning Glory Pool. It was perfectly round and incredibly colorful, with deep red around the edges and bright, clear blue right in the middle. I had a really fun time taking it all in.

After that, my mom said we were going on a hike, and I was like, “Again? We already did one today!” — we’d already hiked to see all the geysers near Old Faithful. This time, we drove for a long while before reaching a big hill. My brother kept begging to go to a playground, but I had to remind him we were in a national park! Climbing up the hill took forever, but once we got to the top, we saw a giant geyser — it was huge, with little bridges crossing over it, and it stretched out as big as three football fields. That was the Grand Prismatic Spring, and it was absolutely massive.

My mom had also scheduled another stop, a trail near Biscuit Basin, but the rangers said it was too unstable and dangerous, so they had shut it down. Honestly, I didn’t mind one bit — I was already worn out from all that hiking.

After that, we checked into a new hotel, and this one was really cool, with art displayed on the wall. While we were moving our stuff in, I spotted a little bison nearby, which totally caught me off guard. Later, my brother and I played some Minecraft and watched a few movies to wind down.

But the most exciting moment came when I went to grab my luggage. I saw a crow chasing a squirrel, and at the very last second, the crow snatched the squirrel right off the branch! It all happened in the blink of an eye. I also noticed the ants here are enormous — way bigger than the ones back home, which are practically the size of a speck. It was a fun but tiring day, and after dinner, I was more than ready to rest.
