Not All Springs Are Clear — Meet the Mud Volcano

Today was another really tiring day, but a fascinating one. All the springs we’d seen before were crystal clear and bursting with colors. Today, though, we saw a spring that was completely different — it was full of mud! It’s called a mud volcano, and it was nothing like the bright, clear pools from the other days.

Here’s the cool part about how it formed. The whole area sits on top of an ancient supervolcano — a giant volcano that erupted long, long ago — and there’s still leftover heat from magma deep underground. That heat pushes up a gas called hydrogen sulfide, which is what makes the strong rotten-egg smell. When that gas reaches the surface and mixes with air, it turns into sulfuric acid. The acid is strong enough to slowly dissolve the surrounding rock and break it down into soft clay. Mix that clay with hot underground water, and you get a bubbling mud volcano!

So the same sulfur is actually doing two jobs at once — it gives the place its stinky smell and helps turn solid rock into mud. I thought that was such a cool connection. I also noticed the mud here is much thicker than regular spring water, almost like boiling oatmeal. Unlike a geyser, which shoots water high into the air, a mud volcano mostly just bubbles and churns, but it’s still really fun to watch.

Learning all of that made the visit feel like a real science adventure. I had a great time, even though I couldn’t get any Wi-Fi the whole time since we were deep inside the national park. Finally, on our way back, we stopped somewhere with Wi-Fi, and I got to play Minecraft with my brother. It felt great to finally get what I’d been waiting for — all in all, it was a fun day.
